Our classes for Muay Thai consist of a warmup, shadowboxing, being shown a technique, one to ones, sparring, and then conditioning. The only thing I'm worried about is developing bad habits during sparring considering for some of us it's our first month in a gym and we are already sparring from day one. Should Muay Tha and MMA strikingi be mostly self taught and you just use the gym to spar and see new techniques that you go off and research in depth by yourself or will I develop bad habits doing it this way? Because that's currently how I am learning. I'm not trying to trash the gym at all, it's just you see so many people say you can't develop technique by yourself and you need to join a gym, but it doesn't feel any different so far? Also the sparring isn't particularly light, after training there for a short amount of time I ended up with a fractured sternum and a traumatic pneumothorax from a teep from a guy that was a good 20Kg heavier than me. I want to go back and was planning on returning to that gym, however, after talking to a friend that's a boxer he said he wouldn't go back and that I should try and find somewhere else. However, my friend said I'm not developing real technique there and shouldn't be sparring yet. If I was to go to the sessions and skip the sparring I'd be paying £80 a month and be missing like 50% of all striking sessions. What do you guys think?
